What is mindfulness and why would it benefit me?
It is the experience of being open and aware within the present moment. To fetch the sense of compassion, curiosity and delightfulness into our lives. This is done by a form of meditation which allows the mind to undergo a series of training practices to eventually allow us to mindful in everyday activities. Similarly, the practice of mindfulness has been shown to relieve stress, improve sleep, lower blood pressure, used as a treatment for depression, anxiety disorders, eating disorders and many more.
Why Yoga?
In the Sankrit language, yoga means ‘union’. Uniting the mind, body and spirit allows greater strength to be built, flexibility, increased relaxation and broader sense of self-awareness. On this retreat, we conduct playful vinyasa flow yoga with restorative elements.
Our elegant Yoga Shala is the absolute place for meditation and yoga practices. Set in its own magical grounds with mature trees, flowers, an abundance of birdlife making it easy to relax, unwind and connect with nature. This connection is an extremely vital part of the week and what makes the Gambia such an ideal location for this retreat.
Highlights of your experience in The Gambia
Your week-long journey will provide you with a great introduction about the real Gambia. In between your yoga and mindfulness sessions you will find out about this country.
- Also, you will visit thought-provoking inspirational women and will gain insight into their lives. Doing this you will encounter a different perspective and have a chance to gain some experience of this amazing different culture.
- Enjoy a morning on River Alahin, with a Rise and Shine Yoga while enjoying the peaceful river
- Enjoy a 1.5-hour picturesque coastal walk along the south to Gunjur.
- Pause on the walk for yoga and mindfulness on the beach.
- Enjoy a scrumptious lunch with an amazing view on the beach.
We a small group and our aim is to create a supportive, friendly and informal atmosphere. The programme is designed around your needs. Our retreat is suitable for beginners who have never tried yoga or mindfulness, as well as those who have some experience.

Jo is a senior leader in the public sector working in the environmental field for over 25 years. A qualified lecturer, Jo has been involved in developing and supporting people through coaching and mentoring throughout her career. Mindfulness has had a huge influence on her own life and she is excited to be able to share her experience with others. Linda is one of the forces behind Ethical Travel portal, a tour operator that specialises in crafting personalised holidays to various destinations around the Globe. One of the main destinations is The Gambia, where Linda lives at Footsteps Eco Lodge several months of the year.
