Do I Need A Visa To Visit India?

2 mins read

Most foreign nationals who enter India for tourist purposes require some form of visa. All who travel to India regardless of what country they’re from must have six months validity left on their passport.

However certain countries are exempt from requiring a visa to enter India, which can obtain a free visa on arrival they are:

Nepal

Bhutan

Maldives (up to 90-day stay)

If you’re from Japan or South Korea you can obtain a visa on arrival and it’s recommended you fill it in advance then give it to the visa officer at the airport. You can download it here.

If you’re not a member of those countries stated above, you can find out if you’re one of the 166 countries who require a visa to enter India here.

If you need to apply for a visa you must do it online via their electronic tourist visa service and apply a minimum 4 days prior to your day of arrival. The government of India advises it takes a turn over of a minimum of three working days to process and issue the electronic visa. You can apply here.

Whilst apply you must have the following:

  1. Scanned bio page your passport displaying photograph and details.
  2. Digital photo of yourself in JPEG format. With a minimum file size of 10 KB and a maximum of 300 KB
  3. Email address
  4. Details and duration of stay
  5. Credit/debit card – (depending on the type of visa, duration, service charge and VAT the visa prices may vary. Upon filling in the application, the price will be quoted at the end).

In order to check the full guidelines on applying we recommend you visit the government’s website and visit the visa instruction section.

Once applied for the visa you must carry it on you at all times of travel and have proof of an onward return ticket.

At Ethical Travel Portal we guide our travellers in the process of applying for the visa. We know it can be a tricky task to understand the complete list of documents needed for the application. Therefore, we supply our travellers with the information needed.
